About Sarah
Born in Bishopthorpe Road in 1980, (Bishy Road): The street functioned as a traditional, post-war high street. It was bustling with independent "make do and mend" shops, such as Woolgrove’s Bakery, Pexton’s hardware, and tailoring stores. Teddy Boy Culture: In the 1980s, the gentleman’s outfitter Leeming & Salisbury (now Trinacria Cafe/Deli ) was a well-known hangout for the city's Teddy Boys.
The Coppergate Dig: Just across the river, the York Archaeological Trust was uncovering roughly 40,000 Viking-Age artefacts, an event that eventually led to the opening of the Jorvik Viking Centre in 1984. York Minster Bell: 1980 saw the spectacular sight of a giant crane lifting a new bell 150 feet up the west front of the world-famous York Minster cathedral. Living in a tight-knit community like the South Bank/Bishopthorpe Road area, where people knew their neighbours and local shopkeepers, fostered in Mei an appreciation for the social impact of local service and a vocation of a family or community doctor.
